Skills

Skills represent the refined capabilities and expertise of a character, defining their ability to perform specific tasks and excel in various situations. Whether it's the raw physicality of athletics, the keen perception required for awareness, or the strategic acumen of tactics, skills are essential for navigating the challenges and opportunities of the world. Each Skill is based on a specific Attribute that influences its effectiveness, and they vary in difficulty, reflecting the complexity in learning each of these.

Mechanics

Skill checks use a single twenty-sided die (1d20). Roll the die and add your bonuses (the relevant Skill, its governing Attribute, etc), then compare the total to a Difficulty Class (DC). Meet or beat the DC and the check succeeds; fall short and it fails.

The DC is set by the situation. For an unopposed task it is a fixed number the Storyteller sets. In combat it is usually the defender's Defense, but some attacks are resisted by a Saving Throw instead, such as Willpower against psychic attacks, for example.

A natural 1 is always a miss, no matter your bonuses. A natural 20 is a critical hit: it always lands, and it rolls double damage.
